Let’s celebrate our mentors

Oct. 27 is National Mentoring Day in the U.S. This day is a good time for us to reflect on and celebrate those individuals that have helped get us to where we are today.
Many people have had an impact on our lives. If you think back on your youth, it may have been a teacher, coach or even a 4-H club leader who encouraged, listened or offered guidance at a critical juncture in your life. This person may have impacted you by helping you find a career path or by helping you develop your set of morals and values.
Mentors are extremely important for youth. Research has shown that mentors can influence the lives of young people by improving their attitudes toward their parents and teachers, encouraging them to take education seriously, introducing them to new career options and listening to them as they face problems or difficult situations.
In 4-H, we have thousands of Kentuckians who volunteer to share their time and talents with our youth, and we are grateful for them. Without them, we could not offer the variety or quantity of quality youth-centered programs that we do. As they share their talents with youth, many of these adults take on the role of mentor and role model with youth, providing them guidance and encouragement as they grow. It is with their help and service that many young people find their voice or passion and become healthy, capable, caring and productive adults.
Mentors make a huge difference in the lives of others, and Kentucky 4-H is always looking for caring adults to volunteer with our youth. For more information, contact the (COUNTY NAME) Extension office.
